CES 2022 – GM Officially Reveals the Chevy Silverado Electric Truck
After Tesla beat everyone to the electric truck party, and after Ford announced their version of the popular Ford F150 in an electric model GM joins the party with the fully electric model Chevrolet Silverado built on the Ultium battery platform.
The fully-electric full size pickup will be available in two versions (EV WT and RST) when it arrives late next year. Starting with the RST First Edition and a basically the work truck version which is the WT model designed for fleet usage. Both will offer an impressive estimated 400-mile range, accommodate up to 350 kW DC fast charging speeds (enabling 100 miles of range to be added in as little as 10 minutes), and include 10.2kW of off-board power, this can help you run anything from corded power tools to home accessories in the event of a power outage or when you are off the grid. The RST vesion is expected to have up to 664 horsepower with more than 780 lb-ft of torque, run a 0-60 in under 4.5 seconds (that is according to GM estimates). The RST will be able to tow up to 10,000 pounds and carry 1,300 pounds of payload. The WT, on the other hand will offer 510 hp and 615 lb-ft of torque, 8,000 pounds of towing and 1,200 pounds of payload to start, though a max tow package able to haul up to 20,000 pounds trailering is in the works and will be available soon after.
Release Date & Pricing Info
GM will start things off with the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado WT EV variant, It is estimated to begin deliveries in spring of 2023, and a GM said told that the first model year is largely spoken for already, so they are basically sold out already. Since these will be fleet purchases, GM hasn't announce a price for the WT yet. But once production gets up to speed, GM will to sell the WT at a starting price of $39,900 before destination charges, although that model will have a lower range.
The other version of the EV Silverado won't roll off the line until fall 2023, The RST First Edition, and it will carry the surprising price tag of $105,000 before destination charges. Eventually after production increases, other trims will follow, like the Trail Boss and other familiar badges. GM hopes to have a Silverado EV variant available at more competitive prices around the $50,000, $60,000, $70,000 and $80,000 ranges, although there is no clear timetable for when the public might expect that.
That gives the competition the Ford F-150 Lightning a big head start in the growing electric pickup-truck segment, but Chevy die-hard fans can start lining up for the Silverado EV RST First Edition today by placing a $100 reservation on the official Chevrolet Silverado EV website.
