Rodents can damage car wire connectors
Rodent wire damage is not a new or recent problem, some observers say is currently increasing as more and more car makers use more plant-based biodegradable materials to reduce waste. In recent years multiple class-action lawsuits have been filed against major automakers like Honda, Hyundai, and Toyota alleging that soy-based products were to blame, but these court cases were later dismissed.
Carmakers argue that the insulation isn’t what’s attracting the rodents. They say squirrels, rats and other critters gravitate toward warm, sheltered spaces and chew on whatever they can find. Never the less it is best for consumers to make sure not to park anywhere rodents are known to congregate, or to leave their cars parked for extended periods of time.
Here are a few tips on how to avoid attracting critters
- Avoid parking your car near trash bins or natural food sources, such as vegetable gardens as these can attract rodents
- Check your garage for stored food, or prime nesting material like newspapers, cardboard, straw, rags and old furniture.
- Look for gaps and holes around the garage windows and doors for possible places that rodents can sneak in.
- Do not store trash bins used for food waste in the garage
- Keep your car clean, make sure food, food wrappers and other food related garbage is disposed of as their scent can draw rodents and other critters
- And finally, move your car regularly, this will discourage rodents from taking up residence. It is a good idea to use your horn when you turn on your car to scare off any napping critters.
Depending on the type of wires that have been damaged, these repairs can cost anywhere between $700 to around $2,000.
